What is the NIE? What is it for and how can you obtain it in Spain?
If you are a foreign national and need to complete administrative procedures in Spain, it is very likely that at some point you will be asked for your NIE (Foreigner Identity Number).
The NIE is a personal, unique and exclusive number assigned to foreign nationals who have an economic, professional, social or administrative relationship with Spain.
It is important to understand that having an NIE does not, by itself, mean that you have legal residence in Spain.
What is the NIE used for?
The NIE is used for many administrative, economic and professional procedures.
It may be required, among other situations, to:
- start a professional or business activity;
- deal with public administrations;
- buy or sell a property;
- carry out certain banking procedures;
- complete tax-related procedures;
- sign certain contracts;
- identify yourself before public authorities;
- carry out other procedures related to administrative life in Spain.
For this reason, it is often one of the first procedures needed by a foreign national who is beginning to have administrative or economic dealings in Spain.
Who may need an NIE?
An NIE may be required by foreign nationals who have economic, professional, social or administrative interests in Spain.
Whether you need one will depend on the type of procedure you want to carry out and your individual circumstances.
Are the NIE and residence the same thing?
No.
This is one of the most common misunderstandings.
The NIE is an identification number assigned to a foreign national.
Residence, on the other hand, refers to the administrative status that allows a person to live legally in Spain when the relevant requirements are met.
Therefore, a person may have an NIE without this automatically meaning that they are legally resident in Spain.
Can citizens of the European Union also need an NIE?
Yes.
A citizen of a European Union country may also need an NIE for certain economic, professional or administrative procedures in Spain.
However, depending on how long they intend to stay in Spain and on their personal circumstances, other different or additional procedures may also be required.
For this reason, it is important to determine which procedure is actually appropriate in each case.
Can I obtain an NIE even if I do not live in Spain?
Yes.
You do not need to be resident in Spain in order to be assigned an NIE.
Some people need it for a specific procedure, an economic transaction, a professional activity or other formalities connected with Spain.
Do you need to know whether you should apply for an NIE?
