What is the difference between NIE, TIE and residence?
When a foreign national arrives in Spain, it is common to come across several terms that can be confusing: NIE, TIE and residence.
Although they are related, they are not the same thing. Understanding the difference can help you know which procedure applies in each situation.
What is the NIE?
The NIE (Foreigner Identity Number) is a personal and unique number used to identify a foreign national before the Spanish authorities.
This number may be required for different administrative, professional, economic or tax-related procedures in Spain.
It is important to remember that having an NIE does not automatically mean that you have legal residence in Spain.
What is the TIE?
The TIE (Foreigner Identity Card) is a physical document that proves the administrative status of a foreign national in Spain when they are required to have one.
The card contains different identification details, including the NIE.
In simple terms:
NIE = identification number
TIE = physical card
Although they are related, they are different concepts.
What does having residence in Spain mean?
Residence refers to the administrative status that allows a foreign national to live legally in Spain when the relevant requirements are met.
There are different types and situations of residence depending on nationality, the reason for the stay and the person’s individual circumstances.
For this reason, two people who both have an NIE may have completely different administrative situations.
Are the NIE and TIE always required at the same time?
Not necessarily.
A person may have an NIE without having a TIE.
This may happen, for example, when someone needs an NIE for a specific procedure but is not in a situation that requires a TIE to be issued.
Do European Union citizens have a TIE?
The situation of European Union citizens is different from that of people from non-EU countries.
Depending on how long they intend to stay in Spain and on their personal circumstances, specific registration procedures as an EU citizen may apply.
For this reason, it is important not to confuse NIE, TIE and the EU Citizen Registration Certificate.
